What's the Going Rate for Someone with Your Skillset? (New Salary Guides)

What’s the going rate for someone with your skillset? To answer that question, Robert Half--the largest HR consulting firm in the world (and my former employer!) publishes salary guides each year. They enable you (and HR managers) to see what each function makes. If you’re in the USA, you can also adjust that rate based on where you live using the Place Values inside the guides.

Robert Half has just published the new guide for finance professionals and I’ve found others for you if you’re in a different job area:

In my experience, knowing the market rate for someone with your skillset is the most powerful weapon when you’re discussing salary with an employer. For example, if the going rate for your position in your area is $63,000 and someone offers you a $55,000 salary for that job, you can reply with, “According to the Robert Half 2019 salary guide, the going rate for this position is $63k. Is there a reason that you’re offering me a salary that’s below the market rate?”

Also, these are the 10 questions that Robert Half is suggesting hiring managers ask candidates this year:

  1. What three business metrics do you think are most critical to your current position and why?
  2. What is the most challenging or technical task you can complete using Excel?
  3. How do you remain current on new regulations?
  4. What process at your current company would you most want to improve? How would you improve it?
  5. If your current company received a $10 million investment, how would you develop a strategy to spend or invest it?
  6. What has been your greatest triumph in your current role?
  7. Tell me about a time you made or saved a substantial amount of money for a company or client.
  8. Tell me about your biggest work-related failure and what you learned from it.
  9. What would the budgeting process look like if you oversaw it?
  10. What trends do you think will have the biggest impact on your job in the next three years?
