Feature differences among TFT and mono is demonstrated in this article, pros and cons included.

TFT-LCD display and mono lcd display are different from many product features, in this article we'd like to discuss something about the differences.

Monochrome LCD Display:

Referred to as mono display, the biggest advantages of mono lcd is tooling cost is much lower than tooling of TFT components, especially tooling the LCD glass, for TFT display, tooling LCD glass might be around 1 million USD, but for mono TFT, tooling could be low to 1000 USD, and this way could make mono lcd display flexible in size, made for many different sizes according to end product's mechanical design and display content. Therefore, mono display is much flexible than TFT in size.

Also unit cost is lower than TFT, due to lower cost of LCD glass and driver IC. For some of AVD mono glass, unit cost is very lower, like about 0.5 USD or even lower.

Besides, since mono display is normally applied for water/gas/electric meter and testing instrument etc industrial market, it requires higher product reliability, e.g. mono lcd display of TN type is very normal to be Operating temperature at 85℃. So far, AV-DISPLAY could achieve LCD display working at environment of temperature at 85℃ and humidity at 85° for 1,000 hours and display average lifetime up to 16 years or above. At the moment, we are evaluating and achieving the standards that monochrome LCD display work at environment of temperature at 85℃ and humidity at 95° for 500 hours, which is SUPER high standard in the field.

Regarding characteristics of mono lcd, the power consumption is much lower, so it's more suitable for the battery management product or product that requires low consumption. Besides, for COG display, it's easy to have electrical corrosion, but AV-DISPLAY is good at anti-electrical corrosion and could achieve internal PPM below 50, and zero PPM at customer side.

But since it's mono display, the display color, display content and viewing angle is not as good as TFT display. For mono lcd, display color and display content are designed only when tooling, and couldn't be changed after finishing tooling, except the graphics display could be programmed anytime at customer side. And except free-view PMVA display, it's not very clear to see the display content of mono lcd from all direction. The PMVA display made by AV-DISPLAY, we are able to make viewing angle 90° from all side, and make the performance similar to TFT display, and size could be very big, cost is lower of course.

TFT-LCD Display:

Since monochrome lcd display could not achieve full color display performance, TFT display is designed to meet higher-end demands due to the full color performance. Regarding TFT display, since the LCD glass tooling fee is very high, so the display size is limited. AVD is providing TFT display of 0.96, 1.08, 1.03, 1.54, 1.77, 2.0, 2.4, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5, 4.2, 4.3, 4.7, 5.0, 5.5, 5.7, 6.0, 6.2, 6.8, 7.0, 8.0, 8.4, 8.8, 9.0, 9.2, 9.7, 10.1, 11, 11.5, 12.1, 12.3, 13.3, 14.6, 15, 15.6, 18.5, 19, 21.5, 24, 27, 31.5 and 32 inch. And resolution is also limited according to display size. Normally the bigger size, the higher resolution. For the same size, the higher resolution, the higher PPI (pixel per inch), thus it has more vivid display.

Compared to mono lcd, TFT display has higher contrast, resolution and better display performance, also the display technology is higher and more complicated. Since more and more customers choose to use TFT display for project, it is also developed for wide range working temperature, many are designed for automotive standard these years, which requires -30/+85℃ for 960 hours at least. And IPS display are more popular than TN display due to the viewing angle and display performance.
