What’s eating away at your peace?

Just as pests slowly invade and damage our plants, life’s challenges can creep into our mental health, quietly wearing us down.

Watching these pests attack my eggplant plants reminds me of how stress, worry, and uncertainty can take hold of our minds, often without us noticing. On this World Mental Health Day, it’s a great time to reflect on what’s disrupting our peace—whether in our garden, our investment portfolio, or our life—and how we can nurture well-being with the right care and attention.

Circumstances are always changing. Sometimes, it feels like certain problems solve themselves, much like certain pests that come and go with the seasons and changes in temperature, humidity, etc. Still, often, it’s our resilience and small daily efforts that make the real difference. Whether we’re tending to our mental health, our gardens, or our finances, taking consistent, thoughtful action ensures long-term growth.

How do you take care of yourself? In a world full of demands—from business, family, and friends—setting boundaries is essential to protecting our peace. In the same way a garden needs pruning to flourish, so does our investment portfolios and mental well-being. Pruning unhealthy branches of a plant allows the healthier parts to grow, much like trimming back unnecessary commitments or making adjustments to investments. Setting boundaries or removing nonessential tasks helps us focus on what truly matters and, ultimately, what will help us thrive.

Think about what pests are “eating” our hours and days – and years! Are there habits, people, or tasks that are draining our energy without adding value to our life?

Just as in gardening or portfolio management, it’s essential to regularly assess and weed out what no longer serves us, focusing instead on what nourishes our growth. However, our impact doesn’t end with self-care. By taking charge of our mental well-being, we become better equipped to have a positive influence on others. When we are strong, balanced, and mindful of our own needs, we create space to support those around us in meaningful ways.

As we cultivate peace in our own lives, we also plant seeds of kindness in the lives of others. By offering a listening ear, sharing resources, or simply showing compassion, we can help alleviate the struggles others may face. As the quote by Ian Maclaren reminds us, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” In a world where everyone is dealing with their own unseen challenges, a small gesture of kindness can make a profound difference. Our actions, no matter how small, may be the spark that encourages someone else to seek help, set boundaries, or take the first step in caring for their mental health.

On this World Mental Health Day, let's reflect not only on what is eating away at our peace, but also on how you can be a positive force in someone else’s life. Sometimes, being a factor of change means creating a safe space for others to share their struggles and feel supported. Just as pruning a plant promotes healthy growth, offering kindness and understanding helps others flourish in their own battles. Together, we can cultivate environments where both we and those around us feel empowered to thrive.

For those who are curious, yes, my eggplants survived. I reached out to experts who suggested several natural solutions, but with limited time, I wasn’t able to implement them. Thankfully, as the intense heat faded, so did most of the pests, leaving only a very small crew to work on my garden. After that, the plants flourished, their growth took off, and we were blessed with an abundant harvest of eggplants, which we’ve enjoyed preparing in various delicious ways.
