What's the deal with "box-pressed"?
Boxed Pressed cigars. All box pressed cigars are made round, and aged round. They are made "looser" with slightly less tobacco than what their finished round counterparts would use in the same ring gauge. Box pressing occurs at the packing stage. While box pressing was initially a natural result of round cigars being packed tightly in boxes, this resulted in a "soft box press".
Today most box-pressed cigars are deliberately pressed prior to packing, either in the soft style or in a more severe square. Box pressing doesn't necessarily affect flavor, but does change the feel of the cigar in mouth and hand, and also makes larger ring gauges feel slightly smaller and perhaps more comfortable and approachable. Personally I don't love cigars in very think ring gauges, but I tend to enjoy those larger ring gauges more in box-pressed expressions.
