What's Cool in Sustainability for December 2024
CannonDesign
We design solutions that help people continuously flourish. Living-Centered Design is how we do it.
As 2024 comes to a close, it marks a year of climate highs and lows. On the positive side, research shows 80% of investors will increase sustainable investments over the next two years. Plus, 95% of the world’s top 250 companies are now publishing carbon reduction targets. Unfortunately, fossil fuel emissions broke a record this year, and as expected, 2024 will be the new hottest year on record.
For this month, we’ve compiled a selection of updates, resources, news and more that are relevant to the design industry and help us all reach sustainability goals. If you have any questions about how sustainability can help deliver better results, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Director of Sustainability, Eric Corey Freed, RA, LEED Fellow.

We are honored to share that CannonDesign has been named the Metropolis Magazine 2024 Planet Positive Firm of the Year! This prestigious awards program celebrates projects, people and ideas boldly helping design a regenerative and equitable future. Only one firm is recognized each year, and we are thrilled to be the 2024 recipient.
The design firm making net-zero emissions buildings a reality
We are proud to share that TIME magazine has published an article highlighting our sustainable design work and several key projects. The story features GSA Building 48, Caltech 's Resnick Sustainability Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida Braman Cancer Center, and Cordilleras Mental Health Campus, along with an interview with our sustainability director, Eric Corey Freed, RA, LEED Fellow .?
This ancient building material is making a comeback
Straw, once limited to eco-friendly homes, is now an engineered structural product that benefits from being both a natural and carbon sequestering material.
Many of our everyday space are doing us harm
The emerging field of neuroarchitecture raises important new ethical questions for architects on designing healthy, natural and vibrant spaces.
How construction materials and technologies are evolving
The construction industry is rapidly evolving, driven by advancements in materials and technology that enhance efficiency, sustainability and durability. From innovative building materials like carbon-neutral concrete and sustainable timber to cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing, modular construction and smart building systems, the landscape of construction is constantly changing.
Universities are ditching carbon offsets – and focusing on cutting emissions instead
The University of Exeter explored the role of carbon offsets in its ambitious target of net zero by 2030, and concluded that carbon offsetting should be removed from plans to reach net zero.
Understand the codes, standards for battery energy storage systems
Electrical engineers must learn to navigate industry codes and standards while designing battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Campus electrical and smart lighting systems for energy efficiency
Understanding the unique challenges of college and university buildings allows electrical engineers to ensure energy efficiency and future scalability.
