Welcome to my weekly roundup of tidbits from the Australian food industry.

  • Melbourne's iconic Baker Bleu has opened a store in Prahran, complementing its Caulfield flagship by offering the favourites of loaves, bagels and pastries in addition to new delicacies like the coveted cheese and vegemite twist.
  • Hot on the heels of South Australia and Canberra is Queensland, whose ban of single-use plastics and polystyrene takeaway containers other than plastic straws in healthcare and schools, came into effect on Wednesday.
  • Nestle is the latest food company weighing in on Australia's plant-based product labelling debate, advocating a voluntary code, correlating with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) submission that there have been minimal complaints around the public being misled by plant-based product labels.
  • According to global data analytics company The NPD Group, Australia's foodservice consumer spend and traffic increased by 23 and 25 per cent respectively across the second quarters of 2020 and 2021, however reaching pre-pandemic levels will take time.
