What’s in coffee - The top 7 Health benefits

by The Dublin Barista School

Some people have been spreading this rumour that coffee is bad for you. You don’t need those people in your life. The reality is that many studies focus on caffeine and the effects of excessive consumption, as the saying goes ‘everything in moderation.’ Caffeine is just one of the many things that makes coffee the drink of choice worldwide but there are many many more benefits to coffee that you may not have realised. Let me introduce 5 of these great wonders. 1.Studies have linked Cafestol and Kahweol, which are both present in coffee, to increased cholesterol and according to a publication by the Harvard Medical School these two chemicals are linked to cancer reduction.
2.Some studies have shown coffee to reduce the risk of liver disease and prevent diabetes.
3.Magnesium - A cup of coffee contains about 7 mg this mineral is essential to keeping the body working from bone growth to nerve function and is used to treat everything from Lyme disease to multiple sclerosis.
4.Potassium. Deficiencies in this mineral can have severe side effects including infertility and heart disease. Potassium can also counter some effects of excess sodium consumption.
5.A study published in the American journal of medicine has found that increased consumption of coffee can affect the likelihood of women developing Tinnitus (a constant ringing in the ear).
6.Niacin (0.5 mg) which is a B vitamin which is associated with an increase in good cholesterol and to modestly reduce bad cholesterol.
7.Choline (6.2 mg) is another essential vitamin which has been linked to lower rates of depression and a reduced risk of several other conditions related to the brain such as schizophrenia, alzheimer's and Tourette’s. So before you start believing all the naysayers, drinking coffee in moderation can be a great way of looking after your health and heart.
