What's the Chef's Kiss in Digital Health?

"Chef's kiss" -- is a phrase that I seem to be hearing everywhere these days.

According to Dictionary.com, "chef's kiss is?a gesture and expression meant to show something is perfect or excellent. The gesture is made by pinching the fingers and thumb of one hand together (often in an OK sign), kissing them, and then tossing them dramatically away from the lips. Its tone can be sincere or ironic."

I was curious to know if I've just been living under a rock or if this indeed a new phrase coming into frequent use -- the Google Search Trend analysis seems to verify my suspicions: over the last 10 years, search interest picks up significantly over the last two years. But, the term's roots go back even further: The?chef’s kiss?comes from the Italian gesture?al bacio, literally “kiss” but with the sense of “excellent.” The image of a male Italian chef performing this gesture—often with a mustache, white chef’s hat, and apron—spread in US advertisements after World War 2.?

It got me wondering, what is the chef's kiss in healthcare? What is perfect or excellent?

From my own experiences:

  • I have medication delivered to my front door. It's like GrubHub for drugs. It seems so easy, the type of company I should invest in or work for. I don't have to stand in line at a retail pharmacy. It just shows up when it's supposed to. Sometimes, it comes with a piece of candy. I've wondered if they do that for people with diabetes...
  • My local urgent care offers flu shots, but when I tried to book online in early October, they had no availability until December. I decided to walk-in with my two boys and we were done in 15 minutes. Despite the online booking issue (I'm assuming they significantly withhold availability for walk-ins), the in-person experience was excellent.

And that's it -- those are the only healthcare chef's kiss examples that I have. Fortunately, I don't have too many interactions with the healthcare system (knock on wood). But, I have many friends who work in healthcare -- what examples do you have?

Chris Chan, recent examples of Health Care Kisses, and also Health Care Misses. As primary caregiver for my 97 year old mom, having prompt access to vital health information is key to informed and timely decision making. Kiss: ability to access lab results on the Quest Diagnostics patient portal the moment they are uploaded, simultaneous with PCP receipt of results. Perfectly executed! Miss: the frustrating, confusing and complex Dignity Health patient portal registration and log in process with multiple fails and nonexistent customer support; and after finally getting through the matrix, learning there is a 48 hour wait period before lab results are posted.
