What's a business rule- Business Rule Development

?

Data Practitioners

The business world relies heavily on having access to accurate data. As data practitioners, we tend to use our skills to support an organization's product and service development. This sort of application is client facing with tangible impacts. It makes us feel good to see clients interacting with dashboards. Within the organization, it's easier to explicitly distinguish the value of the data team from the software development team.

Data Flow

Data flows in and out of each business unit. Not only the product department, HR, operations management, IT, finance, marketing and sales departments generate, collect, analyze, and summarize data assets regularly. This means everyone within these departments is an implementer of their department's specific data standards. Well, how does each team member know what the data standards are? It's through establishing business rules.

Business Rules

Business rules help guide decision making within an organization. They're integral in framing the relationships between data elements. A business rule interprets a single business-related operation to explain a business function using conditional statements, business rules document information and processes that could be repeatable. Business rules are characterized into three main groups.

Business Rule Categories

  • Structural rule
  • decision logic
  • process flow

?

Structural rule

A structural rule is a business rule that's unique to that business.

For example, the Tiktok social media platform stipulates the acceptable post, reel and story sizes.

If you try uploading media content of other sizes, then your visual content will be awkwardly manipulated to fit or be outright rejected by Tiktok.

?

Decision Logic

A decision logic business rule focuses on actions needed to implement that business rule across the organization.

Continuing with the Tiktok post example, there would be a routine that checks the dimension of a post prior to posting to the profile's timeline.

These business rules use formal logic quantifiers, such as if then, if else, only if, when, et cetera.

?

Process Flow

And lastly, a process flow business rule coordinates and groups actions together so that they happen sequentially.

Once a post is uploaded to a social media platform, there are a series of monitoring actions that happen.

The post's engagement rate includes reactions, reposts, and comments is traced.

The original poster is notified of their post's activities, along with the series of protocol to disseminate the post across the poster's network.

?

Conclusion

These three types of business rules are co-created with members of those seven main organizational units and the data practitioners. The data practitioners become the gatekeepers by proxy of the business' operations. An organization runs only as effectively as its ability to translate business function to implementable business rules.
