I often contemplate why people are attracted to certain thing…like fidget spinners.
Just kidding.
No really, like brands that come up with a great campaign and people flock to it, buy it, sign up for it or attend it. For differing reasons we want to be associated with because it somehow improves our lives or betters us as a person by simply being near ‘that thing.’
This event is bigger than you!
Sporting events are a great example of this. I’m from Indianapolis, so I enjoy the occasional Colts game…and I’m amazed at how many people attend and cheer on this team, though I’m guessing most fans have never met nor any personal relationship with the players.
This company and their brand are bigger than you!
What about the car you drive? If your brand-of-choice embodies the values you stand for in your life and as such you have decided to this vehicle to become an extension of your . You probably don’t own any stock there, but you’re excited about it and love to talk about it and show it off to anyone interested to see.
This faith is bigger than you!
What about your faith. Why do people flock to a building on Sunday to stand, sit, sing or listen to some person talk to them for 30 minutes? I would argue that it’s because so much of faith is unknown, and it's not something we can control. The awe of having a faith makes it bigger than us!
We are naturally attracted to things that are bigger than us, but why?
BTU (bigger than us) things have the power to
· Motivate
· Encourage
· Challenge
As humans, I believe we all spend a good portion of our earth-years searching out what our purpose is in life. Being involved in BTU activities allow us a reminder of our current position, a ‘balance check’ of sorts, and encourages us to keep pushing towards our goals, knowing that others have gone before us. This perspective allows us to see the benefits that BTU things have brought to others' lives and therefore are available to us.
So, whether for enjoyment & pleasure, financial motivation, faith, or a host of other reasons…I challenge you to find something bigger than you and pursue it with all you’ve got!
