What's the Best Thing You Ever Built?
Are you a builder?
I don’t just mean a physical builder–I also mean an emotional builder. Have you built a company? A story? An idea? A team?
I’m playing with a new idea that we, as humans are all builders. One of my favorite things to do in my courses is to ask our students and readers about their legacy. Specifically, I ask people:
What do you want to be remembered for?
We have discovered patterns in the answers. Although on the surface the answers seem to vary widely, underneath there seems to be some interesting human behavior motivations. The biggest one?
We get meaning out of building. In other words, we spend our entire life trying to build something. A family, a business, a mission, a team and building (whether that’s something physical or something emotional) is what brings us great meaning.
And this brings me to my question to you today:
This can be an actual thing–like maybe you built an amazing lego rendition of the Golden Gate Bridge, or this can be something conceptual like a family or a team. I want to know what you have built and why it makes you proud.
This is the basis for our next research experiment that I think will blow your mind. Tell me about yours here.
