What’s been learned in the 3 decades since the creation of Scrum

This is the third in a series of articles:

  1. Why Scrum was the original Model-T of Agile
  2. Why Scrum’s success caused the challenges we now see with it
  3. What’s been learned in the 3 decades since the creation of Scrum
  4. Introducing Amplio Scrum
  5. Introducing the Amplio Scrum Coach – going beyond the Scrum Master

"There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” Will Rogers

?"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," and?it is often attributed to philosopher George Santayana;

Winston Churchill Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.

Much of what we’re learned in the last 30 years was known well before Agile.

The attitude that Agile is defined by the Agile Manifesto has held us back.

There has been too much learned in how to apply what was well known before Agile to list it here.? I have written an article Standing on the Shoulders of Giants that describes the foundations of Amplio.

I will list here some of the most pertinent lessons that I’ve taken from this work. It’s the basis for Amplio, Amplio Scrum and the Amplio Scrum Coach.

FOUNDATIONS

  1. Systems thinking provides you a deep understanding of how systems impact people.
  2. Why Theory Is So Important explains how without theory people will be slow to learn while resisting new concepts.
  3. Inherent simplicity provides a way to see the cause and effect even in complex systems.
  4. Common Vs Special Cause tells us that most of the challenges come from our system, not individual mistakes by our people.
  5. Understanding value streams has us look at our systems in a holistic manner.
  6. Factors for Effective Value Streams provide insights into how to make changes to our process without having to run experiments.

PRACTICES

  1. How to run a diagnosis is essential to see where you are so that you can create a workflow that works for you. ?This can be one you create from scratch or as an extension to what you’re already doing.
  2. Customer Journey Mapping: Bridging the Gap Between Business and Development . This talk provides the critical concept of the Minimum Valuable Increment as well as how to use it.
  3. Using Alexandrian patterns enables us to provide any number of solutions while avoiding overloading people.
  4. Amplio Team Estimation is a better way of estimating than the ubiquitous, but ineffective, Planning Poker.

WORKING WITH PEOPLE

  1. The Amplio Coaching Track will provide you information on how to interact with people to coach and consult.
  2. Alignment Vs Coordination discusses how coordination is a symptom of people not being aligned, which works much better.

ONGOING IMPROVEMENT

  1. Plan Do Study Act hails from Deming’s work and is much better approach to improving than merely inspecting and adapting. See The Difference Between Inspect and Adapt and Plan do Study Act (PDSA) and Inspect & Adapt Vs Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), Model T vs Tesla, the big difference between Scrum & Lean
  2. Overcoming disempowering beliefs is necessary to learn what is truly valuable.

While this may at first appear to be an overwhelming amount of information to learn, it isn’t. When new concepts are properly introduced with a combination of theory and practice and in the proper format (over time so you can try things out in the workplace) all of this can be learned in 2-3 months by spending 2 hours or so a week. All the while working in your day job.

And the cost for Amplio University is only $995 for 6 months and several other tracks are included if you choose to take them.

Amplio University has curriculum significantly more advanced than what is here. You can learn what you need at the team level just by working through the blogs and videos presented here.? You can also attend Amplio Community of Practice sessions for free and ask questions by going here .
