What’s The Average “Speed” Of Your Business?

I was in Elk Grove, California recently for the baby shower of my soon to be here granddaughter Lily. To say the family is excited is a vast understatement. I learned my daughter was pregnant Christmas morning and now the big day is less than two months away! The speed between announcement and today is almost unbelievable. On the flight home I thought a lot about the idea of speed.

At 33,000 feet in the air, speed along with some amazing engineering is what kept the airplane I was sitting in from falling out of the sky. SpaceX recently launched a new rocket and among other things I was most impressed by the speed it attained when it left earth. Speed and some very good engineering allows rockets to escape the earth’s gravitational pull. Speed along with some balance is what keeps a bicycle or a motorcycle upright. Speed along with some hard work and long hours is what often determines if a business lives long enough to thrive or if it simply dies.

Speed is a determining factor in so much of what we do and few give it the level of respect it deserves. I recently explained the value of an additional website for a product we could sell in addition to what we were already selling. We had this discussion at about 2:30 in the afternoon. The next morning, she sent me the beta version of the new site already complete to review and approve before going live. The new site was live before noon. She focuses on urgency and how fast she can get things done.

What’s your personal relationship with speed and accomplishment? Working toward perfection is often nothing more than procrastination masquerading as quality control. Speed matters and implementation of a new idea may be critical in the current business climate.
