Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…
I had the privilege of speaking to one of the mentors, Marcus Wong, during the hike. Marcus helps connect university students to overseas internships at startups and companies, and has vast experience working in the public sector. During my conversations with Marcus, I had three takeaways.
?Firstly, the importance of soft skills. Recalling a previous project he embarked on while working at a government agency, there were obstacles to obtaining data from various companies. Companies were unwilling to go through extra trouble to source and share the data. However, Marcus and his team successfully persuaded the companies to share their data by communicating tactfully and adroitly.
?Secondly, having overseas work experience sets us apart. Working overseas broadens our perspectives, expands our network and makes us more independent individuals. This adds value to our career and professional development. Our conversation inspired me to consider pursuing an overseas internship next summer.
Thirdly, pursuing other experiences makes one a more holistic individual. Aside from pursuing activities that help in our academics or professional career, being involved in other activities such as sports and volunteering allows us to be more well-rounded and balanced individuals. I am thankful that Marcus and I connected over similar shared experiences in the past. By talking to Marcus, I was affirmed of my decision to continue my involvement in other pursuits as a student.
Thank you, Marcus, for sharing your invaluable experiences, and the SMC team for organising the hike!
Life motto: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…”.
?When we put our best foot forward in everything we do, such as developing good communication skills or giving our best at work, we demonstrate excellent work ethic and grow as a person. This helps us move one step closer to becoming global-ready youths.
