Whatever Happened to XR in Construction?

The buzz around Apple's Vision Pro headset inspired me to ask the panelist of Chat AEC Tech whether they saw an extended reality (XR) "killer app" emerging for the construction sector. The panelists are tech enthusiasts, but even they were very critical of the present state of XR.

Extended Reality for AEC has existed for many years. Still, we rarely see people wearing augmented reality headsets on construction sites or architects and engineers exploring designs with VR glasses.

What's in the episode

In this episode of Chat AEC Tech, the panelists discuss the use of extended reality in the AEC industry, focusing on applications that use special hardware like headsets for mixed, augmented, and virtual reality.

The panelists share their experiences with mixed, augmented, and virtual reality but struggle to find AEC use cases where the technology has proven useful, reliable, and user-friendly. They assert that if technology or tools allow you to do something you couldn't easily do otherwise, it will be valuable. So far, XR solutions that fulfill that criterion are few and far between.

There's also a discussion about the metaverse and its misconceptions. Damon shares fundamental insights about what the concept is all about.

Finally, the panelists explore the "killer app" of extended reality in the AEC sector. It has to do with communication and collaboration, going beyond video conferencing.

The panelists are:

  • Aarni Heiskanen, AEC Business, the host
  • Cristina Savian, BE-WISE
  • Damon Hernandez, Mixx Reality & AEC Hackathon
  • Enrique Nadales Clavero, Tylko Advisors & BIM Café podcast
  • Jaan Saar, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of Estonia

Thanks for this episode. I agree that XR devices are a nice-to-have tool, and something is missing to make them a need-to-have tool. For me, the killer App would be (from a technical Point of View) : 1. WebXR-based experience accessible using a simple URL from any headset. 2. Usage of WebGPU to handle all the computational work. 3. Bi-directional communication with the BIM software. 4. For Onsite usage, we need an optical?see-through headset like HoloLens or Magic Leap so we feel safer (With a 120 deg + FOV) ?? XR industry is dynamic and predicting how or when the killer app will hit the market is hard.
