Whatever and Appearance

Whatever and Appearance

Some days you don’t feel like bothering.

Maybe no one will notice you wore the same hoodie for the last three days. But you’re not sure they won’t notice. Maybe your lack of grooming will add to your “maverick” persona. Or maybe it just looks like I am lazy.

No one else seems to dress up or care about the way you look. Or do they?

Maybe it doesn’t matter. Whatever.

STOP. Read the research. Look around at the successful people. Appearance matters and predicts success. What you wear and how you look affects your credibility and how others judge you.? People form impressions--remarkably accurate impressions of others--based on very "thin slices" of observation, in some cases only 10 seconds.

Those impressions are both durable and important.

Appearance matters for everyone.

How you dress, your posture and body language are part and parcel of your success. It may not be fair but that is what the research says and continues to say.

When it comes to appearance, Never Say Whatever.

I dress as though I am in the office because it puts me in a more businesslike frame of mind. When I see people in T-shirts or hoodies on videoconferences, I usually think, "Would you dress like that if this meeting were in a conference room at the office?" Since many employers are now requiring at least some time in the office, folks need to re-learn how to "dress for success."
