Whatever… // 1 Corinthians 10:31

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV) | So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Today’s verse in context deals with matters of conscience. The Apostle Paul was speaking specifically about eating food sacrificed to idols. He didn’t have a problem with it because idols are powerless. His advice was all about not doing anything that would compromise your witness with another person if he or she feels differently. This echoed a statement by Jesus about how He warned people against becoming a stumbling block in another’s person’s faith journey (Matthew 18:6). Paul also wrote in Galatians 5:13 that we are free, but that freedom does not include indulging self at the expense of damaging our witness and living for God. As we turn back to today’s verse from 1 Corinthians 10:13, we note that the operative word is, whatever. This means that it matters not if we think something is major or minor, consequential or inconsequential, whatever we do must be done for God’s glory. And since we live relational lives, one of the most glorifying things we can do is to point people to Jesus with everything we do and say. So, make sure that whatever you do is done to glorify God and point people to Him.
