Whataboutery

"Whataboutery" this word has really picked up lately, specially on twitter, never had the chance to use it myself so writing about it.

Well the dictionary defines it as "the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or a difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue." It can be used in a sentence as "all too often, a well-intentioned debate descends into whataboutery"

Was first used while describing the political discourse in Northern Ireland but was used in Russia a lot so if the Americans talk about Human Rights Violations by the Russian govt. the govt. would say but WHAT ABOUT the blacks you lynched back in the 50's.

So if I say 'Say no to firecrackers this Diwali', they'll say but WHAT ABOUT Billu's Marriage in Rohtak, they blew a lot of firecrackers and you didn't say anything about that or what about that Minister in UP? He blew a lot of firecrackers, you didn't say anything about that either..

So you see when you say anything that's right & logical, which can't be refuted, they'll start with what about this, what about that... and this my friends is "Whataboutery"

You'll find a lot of Whataboutery going on, on social media these days, and all too often you might get sucked into it too, so when that happens, its best to excuse yourself from the debate and leave because the other party doesn't have any right or logical answers to your arguments and believe me, you can never win in Whataboutery..
