Happy anniversary!

Wait, what?

That’s right—last Friday, January 12th, marked the three-year anniversary of our relationship. It was three years ago that I clicked that big blue “publish” button and sent out the first issue of Quick Confidence.

Selena Rezvani wearing a red shirt and black leather jacket, smiling and holding up 3 fingers.

As you may recall (*soft sob*), it was a year into a global pandemic. I was craving inspiration, lightheartedness, and quick, practical steps to bolster my confidence, to self-advocate with more vigor, and to make more bold bets on myself. I was also starving for community!

Clearly, you were, too! Your response and our many conversations in the comments have been more than a highlight of my career—more like a brilliant, technicolor beacon!

Personally, writing Quick Confidence has taught me so much about commitment. Because while yes, most weeks I’m brimming with ideas and eager to send them to you, other times… not so much (I’ve had my share of, “argh, I don’t feel like it” weeks!). And you know what? I'm grateful to you. And I'm grateful for the uninspired weeks. Showing up every Tuesday taught me discipline and nudged me to dig deep for genuine stories and tips to share with you.

For example I'll never forget squeezing in a Quick Confidence edition during the world's worst week. Both my twins were sick with an awful flu, my husband was traveling for his job, and the technology on my virtual talk went very, very wrong. Still, in an unexpected way, writing my newsletter edition that week became a refuge.

This forum has also taught me about the power of being prolific. It’s shown me that when you show up week after week, it’s hard NOT to get traction and engagement. This humble newsletter gave rise to so many opportunities I didn’t foresee, most obviously….

Quick Confidence the book. ???

I’m especially proud of that (I mean, I'm still on cloud nine). Not many newsletters can say they became a Wall Street Journal bestselling book, and your pre-orders helped that happen!

Honestly, "2021-me" was very nervous about starting this newsletter. I worried you would find it too “lite” to be valuable, not serious-enough, or insert-your-fave-self-doubting-thought-here. But with all my qualms, I’m so glad I listened to my inner voice and made this bold bet on myself—on us. It required me to practice what I preach, keep promises I made to myself, and show up. And here we are!?

In true Quick Confidence form, these are my biggest takeaways for the past 3 years of sticking with one of the best commitments I've ever made:

Quick Confidence Tips for Consistency and Prolificacy (yes, it’s a word!):

  1. Embodied: Find a rhythm. You can either wait for inspiration and motivation to strike, or you can look for ways to habituate your success and get in a groove. When I can find a familiar rhythm in a repeated task I need to do - whether it's going to the gym or churning out writing, it's about 200% easier to follow through on it! So what are the patterns you want to put in place to make things feel easy, familiar, and accessible? Maybe it's grabbing a water bottle and towel to tell you brain it's time to work out. Maybe it's sitting down on a soft chair with a nice blanket to make writing a consistent, but also pleasant habit. Maybe it's finding a rhythm in a certain kind of music or meditation to get you ready to go deep with spreadsheets! By finding your groove, you become less and less dependent on motivation, which can be fleeting.
  2. Interpersonal: Do it your way. Be memorable by having a distinct point of view or doing things in a new way. Anyone can report the facts; it’s another thing altogether to synthesize information or bring a fresh insight in your unique voice. My point of view with Quick Confidence was that I didn't want the newsletter to be overly stuffy, serious or "businessy" - I wanted it to be joyful, highly practical and actionable, and to be brief! I knew I wanted to bring my own blend of humor, openness, and pragmatism to the conversation that I felt was lacking.
  3. Mindset: I've shared this before because it always stays with me: “If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me.” Behind every leader is her/him/theirself! Think about it: you are the number one agent of change in your career and life. You’re the Chief Negotiation Officer of your title, role, thought leadership, and advancement. While book, courses, networks and mentors are wonderful, there’s no substitute for your own self-directed action. Claim that up-for-grabs power that’s sitting on the table!

So what’s next for us?

I don’t take lightly that over 100,000 people subscribe to Quick Confidence. It’s amazing and humbling that you share your discretionary effort and time to read this. I want to keep letting you into my story and evolution, and take part in yours.?

I’m going to keep showing up in your inbox every Tuesday. I plan to pull back the curtain even more on my personal life and career—to let you see the good, the awkward, the cringe, all of it.?

One of you recently commented that you missed my personal anecdote (I hadn’t included one in that issue) and that really stuck with me. So I promise I will keep them coming!

I also may experiment with some “mini-series” on developing specific aspects of your career. I can’t wait to keep evolving, sharing and learning with you. Cheers!
