What you've got
Whenever I am about to leave a place, I feel a newfound urgency to see certain places and people before I leave.?
It reminds me of Joni Mitchell’s lyrics in her song Big Yellow Taxi, “Don’t it always seem to go / That you don’t know what you’ve got / Till it’s gone.”
Kay Ryan’s poem Eggs also captures this feeling well:?
“We turn out / as tippy as / eggs. Legs / are an illusion. / We are held as in a carton / if someone / loves us. / It’s a pity / only loss / proves this.“
Spend the next few moments reflecting on what you have.?
Don’t let impending departure or the loss of someone be the thing that finally manages to remind you that they matter. There will be very little time or, worse, no time left at all to do anything about it.
Reach out to the friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Plan the trip you’ve postponed for the 10th time. For this very brief moment, time is in your favor.?
