What Is It You’re Running From?

What Is It You’re Running From?

Oh, sweet girl.

What is it you're running from?

What is it you're trying so hard to forget?

Is it the person you've been or the person you've never allowed yourself to be?

I see how you run from yourself. I see how you drink to make the pain go away. To feel that relief wash over you.

What is it you're burying?

What is so terrifying that you drink, hoping it will disappear?

It won't disappear, sweet girl.

It will still be there, even if you manage to quiet it for a short time.

Drinking is a distraction. It's a way to numb yourself so you don't have to feel.

But that numbing comes at a cost.

You wake up to shame and regret. Anxiety and self-loathing. Headaches and heartache.

This is not how life is supposed to be.

It isn't supposed to be this sad. It isn't supposed to be filled with this much hatred toward yourself.

You aren't supposed to want to drink yourself away.

Yes, giving it up is scary.

Unearthing the pain is overwhelming because you have no idea what lies underneath.

Giving up alcohol is remembering the feelings you've worked so hard to forget.

But there is beauty in the pain.

It's a chance to start over. To begin again. To meet yourself where you are and to learn to love you, just as you are.

An opportunity to give yourself what you've never received.

No, it won't happen immediately. You'll have to take it one step at a time.

But every step you take toward loving you is one step closer to freedom.
