What Are Your Wins?

What Are Your Wins?

The following is an excerpt from my book, Rise and Go.

The devil knows that one of the easiest ways to knock down a hard-charging and driven individual is to get that person to look at what is unfinished! He wants us to focus our attention on what is just getting started or in that messy middle phase, and not on what we have already done; what is messy and in progress versus what is clean and complete.

Why?

Because the devil knows that we will feel discontented and discouraged if we keep our eyes on the mess instead of noticing our progress and success.

With this in mind, how content are you with the present?

Have you, like me, forgotten your accomplishments because you are so busy looking at what you have left to finish?

God’s mindset in Genesis offers a refreshing reminder of what our emotional posture needs to be. As He was creating the world over six days, He paused at the end of each one and “saw that it was good.”

The Scripture doesn’t say that God was disappointed He had only gotten so much done. At the end of day two, God doesn’t say, “Oh, man, I only created the land and water. I didn’t do anything with vegetation, plus I still have to create all the animals.”

No, He took pleasure in what He had already made. He ended each day with gratitude and contentment over what He had created, not discontentment over what He had not yet created.

Too often we focus on what we have not accomplished instead of celebrating what we have completed. This may be out of greed for more or envy of others. Either way, a focus on what has yet to be accomplished leads to a lack of motivation and confidence.

When this happens, we stop making progress toward our goals.

You might be thinking that you need to keep building your business and that no one can sit around celebrating all the time. It’s a good point. However, celebration is a necessary mindset shift. If we want to be motivated, we need to have a posture of gratitude for progress, not one of discontent over what has yet to be completed.

We can use gratitude as a weapon against discontent, boredom, and complacency in our lives.

There are also emotional and physical benefits to experiencing gratitude in our lives—benefits that can manifest as an increase in dopamine, an improved immune system, better energy, or improved mental health. It is well known that a person can’t be stressed and smiling at the same time!

Even on our worst weeks, we all have wins. It might be a great conversation, the continuation of a strong habit, or a trip to the gym. The fact that we struggle to remember this illuminates the fact that we’re often focused on the negative or what is not yet completed.

Focusing on the wins in my own life creates momentum. Getting my clients to focus on their own wins creates momentum for them too.

When we focus on our wins, we all start to view our days as God viewed His six days of creation: “it was good.”

If you want to learn more about how I track my wins, check out this post I made about a trip I took with my daughter a few years back.

This practice has been a game changer for me, and those in my circle.
