As the new year approaches it's time to start thinking about what you want your life to look like in 2023 and setting goals. But in order to do that effectively and with intention and purpose it's important to find out what your 'why' is first.
The Japanese have the term “ikigai ,” which can be translated to mean “a reason for being.” This is anything that gives a deep sense of purpose to a person’s life and makes it worthwhile. It is what you get up for every morning.
Finding your 'why' – your purpose or the reason you do what you do – is important because it gives you direction and motivation. It helps you make decisions, set goals, and pursue your passions. When you know your 'why', you are more likely to be fulfilled and satisfied with your life. That's why it's important to find your 'why' before even starting to set goals. Here's why:
Your why provides focus: When you know your 'why', you have a clear sense of purpose that guides your actions and helps you stay focused on what's important. This can make it easier to set and achieve your goals.
Your why keeps you motivated: Having a strong why can help you stay motivated, even when things get tough. When you know why you're doing something, you're more likely to push through challenges and setbacks.
Your why helps you make better decisions: When you know your 'why', you have a clear sense of what you stand for and what matters most to you. This can help you make better decisions that align with your values and goals.
Your why helps you find meaning and fulfilment: When you pursue your passions and purpose, you are more likely to feel fulfilled and satisfied with your life. Finding your 'why' can help you lead a more meaningful and rewarding life.
What is a WHY Statement?
A why statement is a clear and concise expression of your purpose or the reason you do what you do. It can serve as a guiding principle and help you make decisions, set goals, and stay motivated. Here are some steps you can follow to create a why statement.
There are many different things that can be your "why" – the reason you do what you do. You can also have more than one why. Your Why can apply to any part of your life, health, business, finance, family, leisure and social life. Some examples of your why in life could be:
To make a positive impact: You might want to make a difference in the world, whether it's by helping others, protecting the environment, or advancing a cause you believe in.

To achieve personal growth: You might be driven by a desire to learn, grow, and become the best version of yourself.
Example: To start a business in my area of expertise so that as well as making an income I can make a positive impact on people’s lives and make a difference.
To fulfill a sense of purpose: You might feel a sense of purpose or calling to do something meaningful, whether it's through your work, hobbies, or relationships.
To achieve financial stability: You might be motivated by the desire to provide for yourself and your loved ones financially. You may just want to create some extra income so you can afford a holiday or a new car.
Example: To start a small business in my spare time so that we can afford to take a holiday every year.
Example: To start a business in an area of my expertise so that I can double/ triple my income.
To create a sense of accomplishment: You might be driven by a desire to achieve your goals and feel a sense of accomplishment.
To improve your physical or mental health; You may want to improve your mental or physical health to feel or look better or gain confidence.
Example: To Exercise at least 30 minutes so that I can improve my cardiovascular health/maintain a healthy weight.
So, before you start setting goals, take some time to find out what your 'why' is. Remember, your 'why' is unique to you, and it can change over time as you grow and evolve. The important thing is to find what gives you meaning and fulfilment and to pursue it with passion and purpose.
