What Is Your Success?
Dear friends,
Today so far, I have two great inspiring experiences that I'd share with you.
I attended my daughter's Arts High School's coffee and donuts event for parents in Manhattan this morning. The new Assistant Principal Erika shared her student-to-career life experience and mental journey, from doing hard study and work to get into a top university and wanting to study in the medical area for a high-paid doctor profession, to finally deciding to engage in education management and creating equal opportunities for all kids.
She also shared her husband’s personal transitions in academics and work, from knowing nothing about where to go for his future career, to a regular college, to further studying political science, to a startup's finance for 9 years where he got his wealth reward, then to an innovative food company using natural nutrition to replace medicines...
She would illustrate that testing scores and entering a top prestigious school do not necessarily determine a person's future success, and every step especially the tough and struggling ones is actually the best to help a person grow and figure out their own future. Very enlightening. Our parents loved this new AP! And we hope that more such events could be shared with students as well.
On my way home on the subway, one interesting thing happened which may also illustrate that success is all by yourself definition. In the train cart, one middle-aged man distributed a small package of tissue plus a printed colorful paper on quite some empty seats beside passengers, without saying anything. On the paper, there is his picture with his two young daughters. The paper said he has two daughters to support and has financial challenges, and they need help with anything like food or money, etc. So he is giving the tissues away for people's support, instead of begging for free money support. That's a smart way, give before you receive.
I and many other passengers gave him free money, and I returned his tissue and paper package so he could ask for more help. He said thanks and quickly moved to the next cart when the train stopped. That's like his career. No matter if he was genuinely true or not, I appreciate his creativity and courage, and believe that he is making much more money than many others who are going to formal corporate work. Even though I would not encourage more people to do such easy rich things in the subway system, I reflected that success is really by your own efforts and how you would define yourself.
How are you thinking now about the above two stories? Which gave you some inspiration? I'd love to see your comments and sharing!
To your abundant happiness and success...
Love and blessings,
