What your startup can learn from Olympians

The Olympics have just come to an end. The medal table is full to the brim with athletes from all over the world sharing a wide range of gold, silver and bronze medals for their respective disciplines. Watching such individual and collective triumphs can be awe inspiring.

For many who took part , they were simply amateurs who sacrificed everything for 4 years in the pursuit of picking up a medal. For some , they knew deep down that they would not come away with any medal but just competing alone was an accomplishment.

So what does any of this have to do with inspiring your startup you may ask? Well, in a way startups are pretty similar to Olympians. The saying goes that it takes about 10 years to become an overnight success, and in the case with Olympians this is the case. They spend their whole life dedicating hours upon hours on a sport in which they are passionate about just to get to the beginning of a 4 year Olympic cycle. For those 4 years they make even more sacrifices to get the chance to represent their country. Likewise with a startup. For many it takes years just to get an idea up and running and to build an infrastructure for your idea to succeed. Before it even launches, your business has been built upon sacrifices and dedication which are not seen by the public eye.

If you are reading this and are starting off with a business, remember that success comes to those who wait but also those who go out and get it and put the work in. These Olympians have meticulously organised strategies and plans that they stick to for years all in order to execute a game plan for a once in a lifetime moment that happens every 4 years. Develop a strategy and plan that will get your business in a position that will help you for example for funding, attract customers or to boost revenue.

There will be naysayers. People who say you should pack it in. Remember those Olympians? Some of them barely survive on the government grants that they get. But when they get their chance, some ,not all take it, succeed and as a result can benefit massively from all of the handwork and sacrifice that they put in. This applies to your business. Some businesses grow faster than others. But if you firmly believe in your idea then keep going. Everybody has the capacity to become an overnight success.
