WHAT IS YOUR SECRET STRESS RELIEF HACK?

I often work with executives on how to read people and ethically influence them. It's just as important to read our own nonverbal signals and understand how to influence ourselves.

That's particularly true right now. This election season produced a lot of stress. I saw it in the facial expressions, body language and vocal patterns of others. I also recognized my own stress signals of tightness in my facial muscles and shoulders.

For most people, it didn’t matter which candidate they supported. Differences in opinions led to tensions in relationships, even among friends. For some, the election results relieved the stress. For others, the stress has increased dramatically.

As we know, high levels of stress are not good for your health. That’s why we all need ways to help us cope. Here are two of my favorite stress relievers:

  • If time permits, I do something physical, like play tennis or workout with the ball machine
  • If time is short, I go online and look for humor or cute pet videos

Yes, I’m one of those people who gets a dopamine rush when I see funny or sweet videos of dogs, cats or even wild animals.

I go for a jog. I do deep breathing, smile and do power stances and body postures.

I count things. Yesterday on a walk I counted 110 pumpkins. During a boring meeting I counted 80 ceiling panels.
