What Your Resume May Be Missing

I Help Mid-Career Professionals Find a Job They Love or Love the Job They Have // Executive & Career Transition Coach // Host - The Mid-Career GPS Podcast
I remember working on my resume. I had been working on it for weeks as I was preparing to transition from my classroom teaching job to an administrative position. I found every block of time where I could sit, think, and update my resume to get it “job application ready” to submit.
Admittedly, I didn’t like working on it. I found it “taxing.” I didn’t think I was good at it, but after a Master’s degree and the equivalent of another one, I felt I was smart enough to figure it out and write my resume without enlisting the help of a professional resume writer.
One evening I shared my woes and lamented to a friend how much I disliked writing my resume. She asked me this question.
“John, why do people hire you to tutor their children?”
It was an odd question related to my resume, but I was game to answer. Having spent over 12 years as a mathematics teacher and specialist, I knew the answer.
“They hire me because I know how to teach math, and more importantly, I know how to help students learn the concepts. Plus, they are busy parents and don’t want to be frustrated helping their kids that may end up in a fight.”
She looked at me with lasers in her eyes. I felt they were going right through me.
“Exactly!” She said sternly. “Last I knew, you aren’t an expert resume writer. Stop being so damn cheap and pay an expert to do it. You’ll save time and have a resume that someone will want to read, and you can find that new job.”
I paid to get my resume professionally written, and it was exactly what my career needed.

Investing in someone to capture my experience and put it into words was an incredible experience. Once I had my resume in my inbox, I knew I had permission to play. All I needed to do was a few minor customizations, and I sent that resume out over and over again. That resume got me my next FOUR jobs. All I needed to do was update my resume with my new information. I had a high response rate for interview invites.
If you haven’t invested in yourself by getting your resume professionally written, I want you to consider it. Don’t let money be the block that holds you back from getting your resume professionally written.
