Here’s a simple equation:
Personal Brand =
Reputation + Output
Another way to think about personal brand is to ask yourself,
‘What do I want to be known for?’
Let’s start with Reputation:
You are already known for something by your family, friends, colleagues, supervisors, and professors.
What is your reputation? Are you known for:
- Punctuality?
- Asking questions?
- Being hard-working?
- Being polite?
- Being driven?
- Complaining?
- Involvement in organizations?
- Coming to class when attendance isn’t mandatory?
- Staying a few minutes late when your shift is super busy?
Let’s move on to Output:
If you DON’T take ownership of what you want to be known for, people will make up their own minds based on what they observe about you. What do YOU want them to observe about you? What kind of output are you providing?
How are you showing YOUR:
- Engagement about learning?
- Effort to improve scores?
- Coping skills when things don’t go as expected?
- Teamwork?
- Cooperativeness?
- Desire to exceed expectations?
Here’s the good news: It’s never too late to adjust your personal brand. What will your answer to this be? Personal Brand = Reputation + Output
