What is your perception & understanding?

The proposed raising of Warragamba Dam to mitigate flood risk in the western Sydney floodplain is one of Sydney's most complex and expensive water infrastructure projects.
A project which directly effects rivers, waterways, flora, fauna, Aboriginal culture & heritage, and communities across vast areas of western Sydney.
Following the extreme rainfall events and flooding across the western Sydney floodplain in March 2021, it was an interesting time to investigate community and stakeholders understanding and perceptions of flooding in western Sydney and the proposed raising Warragamba Dam project.
Question:
Have these recent flooding events influenced or changed your perception and understanding of flooding in western Sydney and the proposal to raise the Warragamba Dam?
If you have thought for another catchment or floodplain - how have your perceptions and understanding of flood management been influenced and shaped by flooding events in your area?

There is much information out there on the raising Warragamba Dam project, and enough pages of parliamentary submissions and committee hearing transcripts to fill a small hard drive. A particularly good summary is provided by Tom Hubble in The Conversation. https://theconversation.com/sydneys-disastrous-flood-wasnt-unprecedented-were-about-to-enter-a-50-year-period-of-frequent-major-floods-158427
Having not used the linkedin platform much before, I am not sure if I am doing this right. Only one way to find out.
See you at the International RiverSymposium or chat when the EIS is released in November! Cheers, Joel.

3 年Social and physical vulnerability should be assessed along with flood probability, inundation, and depth when it comes to flooding risk modelling, which is usually neglected. It is also very important to know what sort of flooding are we talking about (fluvial, pluvial, alluvial, flash, etc)? Remote sensing and GIS technology have brought us a sensational deep understanding of the environment where floods might occur, which help us to simulate its behaviour. Besides, Machine learning-based methods can be trained by geospatial data adding great value to conventional hydraulic flood models.? I have done a couple of flood projects 6 years ago when I was in Malaysia and have been lucky enough to publish our proposed methodology in high ranking journals, which received much attention from the experts' community.
