What Are Your Options After Getting Fired?
Maybe the signs were there (the company was going under, there were talks about cutting back hours, unsavory evaluations, etc.) or you were completely blindsided, but you got fired from your job. Being fired can be emotionally and financially devastating, but there are immediate steps you can take to recover from the loss and to get back onto the job market. Here are some options for you to consider as you navigate the next part of your career journey.
Ignorance is not bliss in this case. If you got fired and are unsure as to why, take the time to ask your employer for a reason. Understandably this can be a tough conversation to have, but if you genuinely do not know why your employment was terminated, have the discussion. This talk will give you context as to what went wrong so those actions are not repeated in the future. It also helps to identify areas where you may need to improve to fine tune your skillset. If the reasons were out of their control (i.e. the company was going through a financial issue or downsizing), then leave on good terms and keep the proverbial “door” open for future roles. You could even ask your manager for a reference letter if you feel comfortable.?
2. Update your Resume
Once you have given yourself some time to reflect on the situation and are in the mental space to get back into the job market, update your resume. Think about the experience and skills you developed at your last role and how you can add that to your resume for prospective new employers. Also take this time to think about whether you want to find another job in the same industry, or to go into another sector. Take this time to really think about your options and reconnect with old colleagues, mentors, and relatives if you need additional advice.

3. Look for Contract Work
If you are still trying to figure out what you want to do, look for part-time or contract work if your financial situation requires it. Usually these jobs are advertised to cover short-term maternity,? paternity leave or sabbaticals that employees take. This is a great way to test out if an organization or an industry is the right fit for you and to diversify your resume. Plus, you will be earning some money and building a rapport with new work colleagues. You may even be able to negotiate other benefits like medical insurance and PTO, but speak to the HR department to understand what the company can offer you.
4. Brush Up on Interviewing
Being unemployed doesn’t need to be all bad. Take the time to brush up on your interview skills. Practice answering questions for new employers, including why you have any gaps on your resume or why your last job left you. Having a succinct, clear answer will help cast you in a positive light.
