What is your minimum salary requirement?

Perhaps this is the scariest question we are asked to answer during the application process. What if you aim too high and you never get called for an interview because you are disqualified in the screening process. Even worse, what if you low ball the salary and end up making less money than you are worth. Here are a few tips to help you answer that question. I hope you can use these during your next interview.

  1. Ask what the salary range is for the job. Keep in mind the range is based on your skills.
  2. Do a bit of research on market salary for your industry. Remember total compensation is not determined by your base pay only. Knowledge is power, ask about the total compensation package.
  3. Avoid answering the question unless you are pressed to do so. If you must answer provide a range.
  4. Do not discuss compensation with non-decision makers. The hiring manager may be able to go higher to match your requirements if you are the ideal candidate.
  5. Stay positive and know your worth. Do not be afraid to negotiate.

People, Culture and Performance is always ready to coach candidates on their job seeking journey and love helping clients find the best candidate for their job who matches their total compensation package. We can also help companies review current job descriptions and assign compensation packages within market range. I hope to hear from you and any of your HR needs.
