What is on your joy list?
Moments of joy often turn a "so-so" day into a joyful day.

What is on your joy list?

There is so much in life that preoccupies us. Unfortunately, it is usually the things that do not truly feed our souls that we spend the most time thinking about. It is that next Zoom meeting or that work deadline or any other number of anxiety inducing dramas. These preoccupations can make us feel, well, isolated. I find myself wondering, does anyone else feel the same?

I am reminded of the words of Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic philosopher, who wrote in his private Meditations, ‘Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.’ It doesn’t always feel that our happiness or joy are in our control, but then more than one of you have told me recently that you are keeping a ‘joy’ list as a reminder of the small things that make a difference between a joyful day and a so-so day.

So here is the challenge: What is on your joy list? If you would like to participate, simply post something that brings you joy in the comments below.

I’ll start. Things that bring me joy:

  1. Sending a friend surprise ‘just because’ flowers.
  2. Taking a dance break with my kids during their lunch break.
  3. My husband making me a cup of tea during a long afternoon stretch of zoom calls.
  4. Weekly check-ins with friends, scheduled in my calendar because they are important to me.
  5. Leaving my house to get fresh air every day even if it is just a walk around the block in the semi-dark dodging slush puddles.
  6. Driving my daughter to school while she sings along to Ariana Grande at the top of her voice.
  7. Family dinners at 7 pm. My husband shuts off the internet to flush the kids out of their rooms and off of their devices.

I hope you are having a day that brings you joy!

And thank you for sharing your special moments below.

The week our shelter in place began, my husband introduced me to the WSJ's Friday meta crossword. It's a right brain/left brain exercise he thought I'd enjoy. I was hooked. Now we look forward to doing the puzzle together every week...then I puzzle over the meta, sometimes all weekend. It's a simple joy to look forward to every week, and a joy when you have the a-ha moment!

Hearing a city bird chirp this morning, a reminder that Spring isn't so far away.
