What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause refers to the years leading up to a single 24-hour day known as menopause. If you go 12 months without a period, you’re officially considered to have entered menopause for that one day. After this one day, you transition into post-menopause.

During perimenopause, hormone levels fluctuate significantly, leading to a variety of symptoms—both common and uncommon. Sadly, many conventional doctors may not fully prepare women for the array of symptoms they could experience during this time, leaving them feeling overwhelmed and often, frightened.

Common Perimenopause Symptoms

Symptoms vary widely from person to person, and they can last for several years until menopause is reached. The more common symptoms of perimenopause include:

  • Hot flashes ??
  • Night sweats ??
  • Irregular periods ??
  • Mood swings ?? (including rage)
  • Heart palpitations ??
  • Anxiety ??
  • Depression ??
  • Sleep disturbances ??
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight-gain
  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Brain fog

Less common perimenopausal symptoms include:

  • Increased sensitivity to allergens ??
  • Gum problems or dry mouth ??
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling sensations in the extremities ??
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Unusual body odor ??
  • Increased sexual desire
  • Changes in taste
  • Memory lapses
  • Unusual patterns of hair loss
  • Skin tenderness
  • Dry lips
  • Burning mouth syndrome?
  • Dry eyes
  • Itchy skin
  • Skin crawling sensation (formication)
  • Changes in body temperature differing from the typical hot flash?

Managing Symptoms: Conventional and Holistic Approaches

One of the most common treatments doctors recommend is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). While HRT can be effective for many women, long-term use has been linked to an increased risk of breast and reproductive cancers. However, some studies suggest that HRT may help prevent conditions like osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular disease.

For a more holistic approach, it’s beneficial to consult with a Naturopathic Doctor or Functional Medicine Doctor who can help you explore all your options.

Natural Remedies and Lifestyle Changes

As soon as you begin to experience perimenopausal shifts, there are natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments you can make to support your health – many of which I integrate with my own clients:

  • Phytoestrogens ?? – plant-based estrogens found in flaxseeds, soy, and lentils can help balance your hormones.
  • Regular exercise ???♀? – helps regulate mood, maintain weight, and promote better sleep.
  • Stress management techniques ??♀? – practices like yoga and meditation can make a big difference.
  • Balanced diet ?? – incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats to support overall wellness.
  • Proper hydration ?? – aim for at least 2 liters of water a day to help your body through these changes.
  • Quality sleep ?? – poor sleep can worsen symptoms like mood swings and hot flashes. Aim for 7-9 hours of rest each night.
