What is Your Definition of Leadership?

Leadership for me is about leading by example. Showing others how things are done and collaborating with them. My leadership philosophy is, "If I can't do something, I don't really expect those that I'm leading to do it, but I will ask them to try."

It's always one of those things I say, "Be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. Be willing to push a little bit further than you've never pushed before."

If you can convince people to get outside of their comfort zone, I think that’s a true leader. Someone who is always learning, someone who can lead by example, but someone who can help people become faster, better, and more efficient. Those are some of my keys for being an effective leader.

Leadership is also giving the team credit! It is looking any employee in the eyes and making them feel like they are the most important person in your company, and genuinely express your gratitude as you never know, they may one day, be leading You! It's being able to make decisions, important decisions, without having to ask 45 people what it should be. That is follow-through and it is respect, respect for your officers, respect for your Board and respect for all of those that you love and cherish. Leadership requires at once that decisions that are made I followed through on and as a leader, you are willing to take the responsibility for what ever those decisions are, and to admit your mistakes. And last thing, I think great leadership, is lead with Grace.

Leadership is the ability to get results through other people.

Along the same lines, I believe Leadership is showing the way. Creating Order out of Chaos. I believe the attributes of Leadership have changed...Title or status alone are no longer enough. Ability to motivate to action is a deeper requirement for today's leaders and effective leaders understand this is earned, not granted. A strong leader shows his or her people that he or she cares about their personal success and well being and that the things they are asking them to do are not just in the best interests of the organization, but also in the best interests of the individuals. Assuming that people can/ should be able to connect those dots (i.e. "if they do what I am asking, they get to keep their job...") is a typical mistake of weak leaders.
