What Is Your Default Position?

Would you describe yourself as an optimist or a pessimist? Or perhaps a mixture of both, depending on the circumstances? Or do you consider yourself to be less a creature of the emotions and more a logical being, governed by the dictates of the rational mind? I know. The answer we choose isn’t always validated by the views of our friends or partners! But, if you’re interested in exploring the hidden layers of your potential for a happier, healthier life, it’s very useful to understand how and why you think and feel the way you do.

It might come as an unexpected surprise but very few people are truly logical in their behaviours, attitudes and beliefs. We prefer to use our rational faculties to justify our feelings, explain our choices and account for our reactions. However, a brief examination of the mechanics of advertising will quickly confirm that we are governed more by our feelings than by our powers of reason. The question we need to pose is ‘What are our default feelings?’

When you arrive at an instant conclusion, without analysing all the facts, you’re following an ancient behavioural trait that aimed to help us avoid unnecessary distractions. We’ve mentioned the fact in previous discussions that we spend most of our lives in a twilight world of automatic thoughts, feelings and reactions. But when you take the time to become aware of this flood of thoughts and feelings, you create the space to question whether your emotional and mental energy is serving your best interests. A moment of reflection can open up a vast array of other choices, an invitation to sample the advantages of a fresh perspective. Once you recognise that you are following the familiar dictates of your default mental position, you can consider the alternatives. Perhaps your reactions are based on a deep, forgotten layer of emotional responses that might not survive the close scrutiny of an enquiring mind. Perhaps this is the perfect moment for you to discover a more empowering set of reactions that free you from the habit of stress and anxiety. Grant yourself the gift of a much happier, healthier life and experience the freedom of choosing exactly you think and feel.?
