What is your default mode?

We're all guilty of falling into our default mode from time to time. After all, that's where the name comes from; it's our default. When we're faced with a new situation or we need to get something done, we might default to a certain way of operating, thinking or acting. Many times we don't realize that we're doing it. It's so hardwired into our being, that it's just part of who we are.

Today, I invite you to make the subconscious conscious. Ask yourself, What is your default mode?

My default mode straddles two operating types: doing or thinking. (If you're familiar with Gallup's CliftonStrengths, then you'll recognize my default mode as split between the Executing and Thinking domains.) When faced with something new or a strategic problem to solve, I need to either jump in and start acting OR pause and think it through. There's benefits to both. There's drawbacks to both. The same will be true for your default mode, too.

I'm not looking to compare the virtues of one default mode or another. Instead, I simply want you to better understand yours.

Take a few minutes to identify your default mode. Think about its benefits and drawbacks. Reflect on when it's working and when it's malfunctioning. Think about when you utilize it and when you don't. Consider what changes you might want to make to how you respond and react.

Lately, I've discovered that I'm leaning too far on one default over the other. It's time for me to balance my approach so I can balance my energy. What about you? What changes do you need to make?

Self-reflection:

What is your default mode?

What are its benefits and drawbacks?

When is it working and when is it malfunctioning?

What changes do you need to make to feel happy and thriving?

Benefits and drawbacks to our default modes….that’s good for us to recognize. And to recognize when it’s time to shake out of one mode and shift to another.
