What if your day job was like PokĂŠmon Go?

Picture in your mind a traditional gamer and what do you see? A kid playing FIFA soccer on a games console, an online gamer chained to their high-end PC, or a woman on the train knocking off Candy Crush levels. These people all have one thing in common - they're probably sat down, and probably indoors. Do those two attributes sound a lot like an activity you spend most of your day doing too?
And then, overnight, gaming has changed. PokĂŠmon Go has become an obsession. More popular than Twitter. More engaged than Facebook. More searched on than, well, the internet's most infamous pastime.
Suddenly we're stumbling, bleary eyed, into the great unknown of the outdoors. Yes, we're still head-down, slaves to our phones, but at least we're getting some fresh air now. Could we emulate this sudden bout of physical activity in our day jobs too? Is there really any reason why, in today's mobile-enabled world, many of us still spend 8 hours a day sat at a computer?
Just because we can, doesn't mean we will
From the GameBoy, to the 3DS, to mobile gaming today, playing games on the go has been possible for decades. We're not stuck with finding a TV and a wired-in console to play games. Yet, even with this mobility, gaming still happens primarily in a seated position. We've traded the couch for the coffee shop. Just because playing games can be done in the great outdoors, doesn't mean we'll do it.
What got us outside was the requirement to do so. PokĂŠmon Go isn't much fun when you're sat in Starbucks. We're incented to walk to the park, head to the fountain, or just walk around randomly, ready to stumble on our fifth Rattata of the day.
Making the mobile office work
The mobile office works much the same way. Yes, we could blast through our email inbox while out and about, but really... why bother? I can do the same thing from the couch. But what if we were rewarded for doing so? Would these ideas incentivize us to move outdoors in our day jobs like PokĂŠmon Go does for our free time?
- Walk 10 paces to update your inbox
- Collect pieces of a work spreadsheet by collecting them on the street in augmented reality
- Battle your boss online at a virtual gym - lose and the next task on the to-do list is yours; win and you can delegate it
What changes to your mobile work-life would encourage you to get outdoors and exercise while still being productive? Could we live our work lives as though we were playing PokĂŠmon Go? Let me know in the comments!
