What If Your Client Wants Your Opinion? Here's What to Give Them Instead.

Have you ever had a client that really desires your opinion? As a coach, would you want to give them your advice or have the client trust their own intuition?

As a coach we desire for the client to see all the answers within themself, yet sometimes the client still asks for our advice. How can you shift the conversation so that the client is able to see the answers within? We had a fantastic discussion about this today in our ICF mentorship training program!

  What is a simple shift to the coach/client relationship so that the coach asks the questions and the client has the answers? So many ways! One simple technique we teach is called parallel role reversal. In this technique the coach moves the conversation to an outside 3rd party, removing himself/herself and the client from the situation. For example the coach could say “sometimes a client wants advice from other people, and then that advice might not work for that person. What comes up for you when I say that?” This question removes the person you’re talking to, and it removes you, the coach; this allows the client to see the situation happening outside of him or her self.
