What are your beliefs?

When the L&T Chairman - S. N. Subrahmanyan talks about working 90 hours per week, it reflects his core belief of prorating work above anything else.
When Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph shares his practice of never scheduling meetings after 5 pm on a Tuesday for over thirty years, it reflects his belief of prioritizing life outside of work.

Your approach and perspective on work-life balance depends on which belief school you belong to.

It is also however true that not many of us make this choice for ourselves. The society and it’s deep-rooted conditioning makes it for us.? Here are some such beliefs and how they impact our reality.

1. Staying busy will get me a promotion

The belief leads to overworking and sacrificing personal commitments, personal health leading to poor well-being

2. Everything needs to be perfect

Spends more than required time on tasks to meet unrealistic standards causing the person to be in a perpetual cycle of stress.

3. I have to do everything myself

This person shows lack of trust in team members and colleagues, takes on more than they can manage leading to overwhelm and limited time for personal life.

4. I need to be available 24*7

Prioritizes work above everything else, indicating poor boundaries. Causes energy drain, increase in stress and burnout.

5. I don’t have enough time

This person always tries to accomplish more in less. Can face high self-doubt and enter a burnout cycle.

6. Taking breaks is a waste of time

Placing zero value on rest and rejuvenation causes poor concentration and reduced productivity. One can be in a constant state of fatigue in the guise of a busy lifestyle.

7. Everything is important

This leads to ineffective prioritization, scattered focus and multitasking, spending more time in finishing tasks than usual. This person is always consumed with work related thoughts, unable to rest and relax.

8. I need to say yes to everything

This happens when there is a constant need to prove oneself and leads to burnout.

The good part is that we as a community are no longer blindly following these societal norms. Younger generations especially are challenging and contesting these beliefs. Millennials like me who have these deep-rooted foundations, are also trying to unlearn and find their desired harmony.
