What are you working on...

Training Tuesday: What are you working on....

Anyone who trains with me on a regular basis knows that this is a VERY common question. Why? Because if I don't have something specific I am working on in each training, I tend to end up with a scattershot approach and it is almost always ugly.

And, honestly, because I know I can be a better trainer and my dog can be more solid in whatever behavior I am asking them to do.

This requires me to go through a decision matrix of all of the different things I can work on. My VERY FIRST decision when doing odor/scent work is to ask myself if I am working in the search, locate or report section of this complex behavior chain.

I first heard of this almost 19 years ago while at my first training with Steve White (https://www.proactivek9.com/). Just by thinking through what I want to be working on and all of the criteria I can shift in each one of these segments of the chain, I can better structure my training.

After all, as a systematic behavior changer (trainer)....creating tools and structures that allow me to train outside the box is where I want to be. Check out the webinar from the International Casino and Resort Working Dog Association where I talk about training outside the box. https://youtu.be/q7GEIcY8SOc

There are a few openings left in the TFR to Search Course for the month of April AND I have opened another cohort of the CTO/TFR course for April as well!
