What Are You Willing to Risk Your Neck For?

What Are You Willing to Risk Your Neck For?

Have you ever boldly gone to bat for someone in the way you wish you’d go to bat for yourself?

I see this happen all the time.

A client of mine went above and beyond to get a direct report promoted to director even though the leadership team had an unfavorable opinion (clouded by a former manager who had been let go) and were not bought in. Their lack of exposure and actual interaction with her, complicated by a communication barrier (the direct report has an accent) and demeanor (she’s introverted) led them to not even put her on the consideration list!???

My client knew that she had to step in otherwise the career of this person would be capped.??

She made up her mind that she didn’t want to lose this person to another company and she took a stand! She refused to take no for an answer, had a fully prepared report with tangible examples and the bottom line impact that her direct report was directly responsible for.?

And she won.

Her direct report is the new director.

Was it bold??

Fuck yeah, but she didn’t see it that way.?

For her it was the only thing to do.?

She decided to use her decisive, convicted and unwavering energy to risk her neck and do what she felt was right.

That’s true boldness.

Boldness is caring about a value or perspective enough to overcome the fear of taking a stand because not taking a stand has bigger consequences.?

It’s a quality of integrity I come back to whenever clients say, “I wish I were more bold - that I had the confidence to just say what I want without caring about the consequences or what people would think.”

I tell them it’s not recklessness or aggressiveness.?

It’s not bullyish or without concern.?

It’s actually the opposite.?

It’s with deep concern that boldness acts.

It comes as a result of an underlying belief and cause that’s meaningful enough that it calls for more than the regular you. It elicits the brave, courageous and confident within you - the you that isn’t afraid of failure or of looking stupid because the cause at hand is too important.

If you’re looking to be more bold,?ask yourself, “What am I willing to risk my neck for?”

Look for the principles and people you care enough about to fight for and then channel that passion and intention into showing up more boldly.?

Harness that power into taking a stand because it’s not an option.

It’s actually the only thing you can do.
