What Are You Waiting For?

Patience—an underrated yet powerful virtue that separates the common from the extraordinary. In a world where instant gratification reigns, how long can you wait before giving in? Before succumbing to fear, pressure, or your own fleeting desires?

Many people cave early, driven by the fear of missing out. But I’ve observed one key difference between the common and the uncommon: patience.

The common are guided by fear, anxious that waiting will cost them the reward they seek. On the other hand, the uncommon operate with faith, trusting that patience will lead to rewards beyond their wildest dreams.

I’ll be honest—I haven’t always been the most patient person. But over the years, I’ve developed systems in my life to cultivate patience. One of these systems involves something as simple as wine.

Years ago, my wife and I purchased bottles of premium wine. Could we have enjoyed them the day we bought them? Of course. But I knew that by waiting until year seven—when the wine would reach its peak—we’d experience something far more special.

However, patience comes with a cost. Just as aging wine requires careful storage, life demands an exchange when practicing delayed gratification. The bottles need to be protected from light and kept at an optimal temperature. Likewise, our dreams and goals need nurturing, discipline, and time to mature.

Now, after five years, we’re approaching that perfect moment to enjoy these wines. And as we look forward to that celebration, I’m reminded that waiting is often the hardest part—but it’s always worth it.

So, I ask you: What are you waiting for?

Pick something you believe in, commit to it fully, and don’t give in to fear or temptation. The reward will come, and when it does, it will be worth every bit of the wait.

Let’s celebrate patience. After all, the best victories aren’t rushed—they’re savored.

Patience is underrated, especially in a world obsessed with instant results. It’s like the wine example; you need the right environment and conditions to nurture greatness. Most people quit too soon, not realizing they’re just steps away from that breakthrough. Setting up systems for patience is key. Sean K. Shahkarami, CPA, CFF, MAc
