What are you waiting for?

What are you waiting for?

You’ve heard the phrase,

“Strike while the iron is hot”.

But how hot is HOT?

Well, it’s different for different materials.

For centuries - from around 1200BC through to the mid 1800s.

It was all about Iron…The IRON AGE.

Simpler times.

Iron was iron.

But now it’s all about Steel.

A more complex material.

You add carbon to iron, add silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen.

Some steels have nickel, Chromium, and a bunch of other things.

It feels much more complex than it used to.

The material has changed, but the phrase has not.

Strike while the iron is hot.

So how hot is HOT?

There is a ‘critical temperature’ for different metals when they go through a crystalline structure change.

It’s a critical moment of momentum.

At this moment transformation is easier.

At the critical temperature, Metal is easier to move.

It requires less energy to change shape.

To transform.

But it’s a delicate moment.

If you push the heat too far…

…the metal will burn (yes, metal does burn).

Burned metal needs to be cut away, it no longer molds.

So it’s important to know the temperature for the specific metal.

If you have really expensive equipment in a lab you can heat it to very precise temperatures.

For centuries, none of this equipment existed.

There were no scientific conditions…no scientific lab.

There was the Blacksmiths Workshop.

And for centuries Blacksmiths trained to know ‘critical temperatures’.

The colour gives it away.

It’s a deep yellow.

Orange is nearly there, but not quite right.

Red…far too cool…only about 700 degrees celsius (1300F).

Beating cold metal SCARS it.

Bright yellow heading into white…TOO HOT!

It’ll turn into a sparkler and burn away.

Ya got to manage your heat.

AND…Strike while the iron is hot!

The moment to act.

The moment to bring the hammer down.

Take advantage of the heat.

Use the moment to transform.

Some hesitate.

They wait too long…and things cool down.

They have to START all over AGAIN.

RE-heat.

Spend more energy.

Waste more fuel.

Knowing your right temperature is useful.

Knowing what it LOOKS LIKE is better.

STRIKING at that moment is KEY.

Use the momentum you’ve created and take advantage while you can.

These things can be learned.

These things are taught.

Get a teacher and learn them.

Strike while the iron is hot.
