What Are You Thinking About?
The key is what you think about as it relates to what you are doing. For any of us who have driven for some time, the process is practically automatic. There is no thought about driving as we ponder other challenges or whatever situation we are focused on handling. In fact, many of the things we do are automatic. How often have you given deep thought towards brushing your teeth, taking a shower, checking your Facebook status, or even tying your shoes? The drawback towards living a life on autopilot is that it holds back our true potential. We have not given real thought to where we want to go, what we want to do, or develop a successful plan of action. We become subjected to life happening to us rather than the other way around. We are shifted rather than shifting. We are defensive rather than in a strong offensive state. We retreat rather than press forward. We walk around aimlessly wondering how life seemed to pass us by. Something is not right with this picture and the key steps are what we can do about removing ourselves from this cycle.
1. Be intentional in your approach: give serious thought as to what you truly want to do. Make plans and prepare your steps such that you have a specific direction you are headed. A GPS provides a set of instructions to allow us to go from point A to B without delay or detour. The same holds true in our thought inspired journey. Plan, Prepare, and Push thru the competing thoughts towards what is most important to you.
2. Visualize the results: I love the story of how Jim Carrey visualized his success as an actor, even going as far as writing himself a check for 10 million dollars. He didn’t simply write the check and go eat a sandwich. He took some specific and gazelle like action to position himself to receive that amount in the time frame he gave himself. See the end result and how that lines up with your intent. Make sure your actions are in alignment towards what you hope to achieve.
3. Accept nothing less: push yourself and recognize that all the potential in the world is not going to get it done. Obstacles and Adversity will be uninvited guests to your Success gathering and will demand an audience. No need to ignore or hope they go away. The only way you remove their presence is to go right thru them. No side step, delay, or feeling sorry. Handle it, Deal with it, and Become stronger from it
4. Finish what is started: we usually begin a task with enthusiasm and motivation. We start from the gate running and nothing can get in our way. Most of us realize that something called Adversity or lack of interest might set in and the initial burst of energy becomes a slow crawl. The key is to stick with what you start until completed. My 8th grade teacher shared a saying that is relevant to this point.
If a task is once Begun, never leave it till it’s done. Be the labor Great or Small, do it Well or not at all.
