What if You Started with Data Viz?

What if, the next time you're working with data, you start out by acknowledging that you are ultimately going to create a visualization that will be the core experience for your audience?
What if you analyzed your data visually, at least as much as you looked at pivot tables, KPIs, and other metrics? If you did this, you would be much more likely to come up with a visual that is impactful for your audience.
Unless...you got so obsessed with the visuals that you forgot to actually remember what you're doing, what your audience is supposed to do with this information, and why you're even doing anything at all...which does happen!
Lesson: A DataViz-First Approach
A "visual first" approach is a highly nuanced and weird thing to advocate for, as you'll see in my lesson on the subject.
Listen: Rob Smith on A DataViz-First Approach
Rob Smith is managing director of The Pudding , a publication that creates "visual essays with data". They have a visual-first approach because they always know they're creating visuals as a final output. Yet, as Rob will elaborate, it's not like they're obsessed with the visuals. Learn about their thought process for coming up with some of the best data stories you'll find!
