What Are You Selling?
Is your product more interesting than a copy paper?
Copy paper was the main product of the fictional Dunder-Mifflin company in the American version of TV show the “Office”.
Show characters were promoting and selling various paper products. Still it is, one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Because it was based in Scranton, it captured perfectly the idiosyncrasies of many office cultures and it was just plain funny.
Remember, the main product was paper.
Now, let me take you back to our present time. A few days ago, I was browsing my Facebook Feed and came across a quite radiant picture posted by one of my friends.
Photo was taken in the kitchen, on the countertop. What was most unusual, was the content of the picture. I saw a neatly arranged mosaic of zucchini, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, onions, and potatoes (plus beets – that would make Dwight’s character from the “Office” very proud).
The caption on the post simply read:
“Hello, Misfit friends. This is our time of the month.”
I was intrigued. What is this tantalizing bounty of fresh produce and who are the Misfits?
After reading through the comments on the post, I learned that Misfits is a produce delivery subscription. Where you choose to get a box of fresh, organic produce delivered to your door. The contents of the box consist of produce that looks too irregular or “ugly” to be sold at stores. And you as a savvy subscriber, get a substantial discount – all while helping farm owners reduce waist and encourage sustainable product sourcing.
My friend who purchased and then photographed the box’s bounty, obviously was extremely proud to display the contents of the box. And it spurred a flurry of interest and activity on his social media page.
This got me thinking.
If you’re in business right now. Does your product elicit this type of curiosity? When clients buy from you, do they feel like the smartest person in the room?
Are your clients willing to take beautiful photos of your solution to broadcast to the whole world?
And also show how smart, savvy and conscientious they really are, because they bought from you?
Or does your product or solution is similar to the copy paper from my fictional friends at the Office? Does anyone place rims of copy paper on their countertop to show to the world? And revel in the adulation because they choose to buy from you?
Final Thoughts
"Does your product, solution and offer create an intriguing story?"
A story where you shift from being the hero, and instead place the spotlight on your clients and make them the real hero.
"Do you make your clients and customers feel and look smart? Because they bought from you?"
I invite you to reflect on above questions and welcome all of your feedback.
Stay safe and intriguing.
