It is not what you see, it is what you don't see that makes a difference

We love what we call our TNT's. Our tiny noticeable touches. We have over a hundred of them that Clients never see. They just experience the reliability or joy that they provide.
We were recently called in by a Management Company to sort out some issues they were having with a large technology installation in a very expensive home. On the surface, the installation looked very smart but digging deeper we uncovered a wealth of short cuts and bodges that sadly spoil so many people experience of our unregulated industry. This collection of bits was supposed to allow the owner to control equipment in a closed cupboard, from his iPad. The technician clearly had no connectors, no soldering iron, no correct cable or anyway of making good connections. Then to add insult, instead of wiring it internally in the device, he simply used some blue insulating tape to stick it to the unit.
Our TNT is to internally modify equipment (we provide a full warranty to match the Manufacturer) to make the installation neat and to make sure nothing can be pulled apart by using industry standard connectors. Does the Client care? They do when they can't control their £100k system because of a simple bodge by an engineer who didn't care enough to do the right thing.
It costs only marginally more to do the right thing; but it has to be part of a company culture to want to do them.

7 年This is unfortunately an all to common problem in the industry. We are coming across it more and more these days, and it inevitable costs the client more to correct than it would have to appoint the correct company in the begin. Reputable, recommended installers may be more expensive at the tender stage, that's because they know what there doing, and what it takes to do the install properly. Such a shame.

7 年Unfortunately the lack of care (respect) you describe concerns a lot of businesses... Following the path of quality always pays off, it's just about how far you want to go

7 年Interesting article. I am no longer involved with engineering and/or installations, but still have to deal with this on a regular basis. As a programmer, this kind of lack of skills you mention create a huge amount of frustration with equipment not working, only to have to be traced to its route cause by the programmer. Time = money and this kind of thing often costs us a lot of time. It is interesting just how few engineers can actually solder these days. I have been known to do it for them, just t be able to get my work done ... Keep up the good work, guys!
