What If You Ran Your Life Like You Run Your Business?

What If You Ran Your Life Like You Run Your Business?

Success in Business—Why Not in Life?

You wouldn’t let your business run on autopilot. You wouldn’t show up late to important meetings, ignore key clients, or stop tracking your numbers. So why do we let our marriages, health, kids, faith, and purpose drift?

Think about it. You’re driven, committed, and focused at work because you know that’s what it takes to win. Yet too often, we fail to apply that same intensity to the things that matter most.

1. Prioritization: What Gets Scheduled Gets Done

You wouldn’t skip a meeting with your biggest client because “you were too tired.” You wouldn’t tell your team, “We’ll work on that critical project when things slow down.” No. You make time, no matter what.

But do you apply that same level of intentionality to your marriage, health, or family?

Real example: A CEO I coached had a calendar full of high-stakes meetings, but his personal life was in shambles. His wife felt like a ghost in his life, and his kids were getting his leftovers. We applied a simple shift—if his family was truly a priority, they had to be on his calendar. He scheduled a weekly date night and blocked out time for his kids. Just like a business meeting, those commitments weren’t optional. Within months, his relationships transformed.

Want to know what’s important in your life? Look at your calendar.

2. Accountability: Do You Measure What Matters?

At work, “I tried” doesn’t cut it. You either deliver or you don’t. There are KPIs, performance reviews, and financial reports tracking every move.

But in life? We often let ourselves off the hook. We say things like:

  • “I meant to eat healthy, but it was a rough day.”
  • “I should spend more time with my wife, but she understands.”
  • “I need to work on my faith, but I’ll get to it when life slows down.”
  • "Look, nobody is perfect"

Imagine if we ran a business that way. No tracking. No accountability. No real expectations. It would crash and burn.

Real example: One of my clients—a high-performing business leader—was struggling with his health. He told me, “I know I should work out, but I just don’t have time.” So I asked him, “If your boss told you to get in shape for a $500,000 bonus, would you find the time?” His answer? “Of course.” The truth is, he had the time all along—he just wasn’t holding himself accountable. He started tracking his workouts like he tracked his business performance. Within three months, he lost weight, had more energy, and felt sharper than ever.

If you don’t measure it, you won’t change it.

3. Growth & Improvement: Are You Investing in More Than Work?

You wouldn’t expect your business to grow if you never learned new skills, never adjusted strategies, and never sought expert advice. You wouldn’t say, “We’ll just keep doing what we’ve always done and hope for the best.” That’s a death sentence in business.

So why do we treat our marriages, health, and personal growth that way?

Real example: A top sales executive I worked with was constantly upskilling at work—attending leadership seminars, reading books, hiring coaches. But when I asked him, “When’s the last time you and your wife went to a marriage retreat? When’s the last time you invested in becoming a better father?”

Silence.

The same people who spend thousands on business coaching will balk at the idea of hiring a personal mentor, attending a marriage seminar, or investing in their health. Why?

Because they think life should just fall into place.

But here’s the truth—success takes intentional growth, everywhere. You want a thriving marriage? Study it. You want better health? Get a plan and a coach. You want to deepen your faith? Put in the work.

The people who win at life aren’t just hoping things get better. They’re investing in it, tracking it, and prioritizing it—just like they do at work.

Your Business Is Booming… But What About Your Life?

Look at your calendar. Look at your level of accountability. Look at what you’re investing in.

If you’re winning at work but losing at home, it’s time for a shift.

Success isn’t just about business—it’s about life. So what are you going to do about it?

Love this! I do put some personal things on the calendar (date night with hubby, church commitments, etc.), but honestly there's lots more I could put on there. Thank you for this!
