What are you passionate about???
During this WFH period, I’ve been connecting with my broader team across APAC just to get to know more folks. It’s been lovely meeting people across India, China, Japan and Australia! Our meetings are more of ‘buddy chats’ so it is pretty informal.
Since we are connected by work, we’d naturally start off by talking about work, what we do, what our roles entail etc. The fun part comes after. I usually like to ask the question , ’So, what do you do outside of work? Any hobbies or passions?’
I then see one of three reactions as they start describing their interests:
1) A shy, reserved smile
2) A sudden burst of excitement & energy (that’s usually me, when I start talking about health / fitness / productivity or my personal branding stuff)
3) A confused look (I suspect this occurs as they may not have had any other interests, or it could possibly be the first time someone is asking them this question.)
With reactions 1) and 2), I see the same spark or 'glow’ of excitement as they talk about their passions. I can’t particularly describe it any better, but you can just feel a different sort of vibe and energy coming from that person! It’s been fascinating hearing about what people are interested in. The most interesting ones I have come across so far are 'Bird-watching’ and 'Lego building’!
Many people fall into the trap of letting their career become their whole identity. People with the 3rd reaction probably fall into this bucket. At one point of time, I was guilty of this well! My job was my whole life, and if I didn’t do well at work, well - I was crushed.
After much contemplation, I realized that there is so much more to life than work. Don’t get me wrong, work is an important piece of the equation (especially since it’s probably the main economic engine sustaining you at this point of time.) Whatever I do at work, I make sure I give it my 100% - whatever I produce, I hold myself accountable to ensuring that it is of the highest quality, and that I’m still representing Google to the best of my abilities.
The key to juggling this, is (and has always been): balance and moderation. Make sure you are taking care of yourself, and giving yourself the time and space you need to pursue your other interests. Having other interests makes you more well rounded and interesting as a person! When you’re not at work, practice really being 'present’ with your friends and loved ones. After all, they love you and want to spend what precious time they have with you :)
So the next time you meet someone new, instead of asking ’ What do you do for work?’ - ask them 'What are you passionate about?’ That’ll start a very different (and probably more interesting) conversation altogether :)
