What You Need to Know about Waves H-Reverb Hybrid Reverb Plug-in

By Collin Makariak

In the world of mixing and mastering there are many facets to consider when making your project. Chief among them is the process of sound waves bouncing off of walls and surfaces in the recording studio. This process creates what is known as reverb. A good sounding reverb with skilled and thoughtful production can be a game changer in the mastering process. Likewise, reverb that is used poorly can create muddiness and a lack of clarity in the sound.

Plug-ins to mimic the reverb of a space usually take one of two paths: algorithmic or convolution. Algorithmic reverb is created through a series of mathematical calculations and recirculating delays to mimic the sound of an environment. These reverbs provide flexible usage but come at the price of realism as decay patterns tend to be linear in these plug-ins.

On the other hand, convolution reverb uses sampled recordings of real-life environments. Convolution provides incredible results that are more realistic sounding. As someone who sees the value of both, I have been looking for a plug-in that provides the flexibility to achieve sound characteristics of algorithmic and convolution reverb and was excited to get a chance to test out Waves Audio’s H-Reverb Hybrid Reverb.

As this is Waves’ attempt at creating a reverb plug-in that marries algorithmic and sample-based technologies, you are greeted to a ton of dials and options in the interface. The layout makes sense and with a small amount of research and exploring becomes quite easy to work with.

Controls for delays, input and output echoes, dynamics, modulations, EQ, and modulation are sectioned off. Near the top of the interface is a display and controls for overall reverb time. There are numerous presets available that all sound great. Whether you are looking for a fast workflow to pump out that track more quickly or have the time to control any single aspect of your reverb, this offering has you covered.
